Asunto: Surprise: surface makes inert substance reactive
Normally, a manganese porphyrin is a very stable compound. However, researchers at Radboud University saw that it suddenly undergoes oxidation on a layer of graphite. With their self-constructed scanning tunnelling microscope they could observe the reactions of individual molecules. Electrons coming from the graphite cause the manganese compound to become reactive. This chance discovery may be of great significance for chemistry as it will no longer be necessary to use a reagent. The results are published in on 2 June in Nature Chemistry. |
